Hugging Face

Character.AI

ORP

ORP (Old Role Play) 0.8B is a full-parameter SFT finetune of Qwen/Qwen3.5-0.8B on PygmalionAI/PIPPA, which itself is simply a dataset/archive containing conversations with the Character.AI bot from back in 2023. Therefore, I decided to name this model (series? we'll see) ORP.

The "new" Character.AI mostly generates nonsensical all-filler no-content -ish responses, at least on the free models. The goal was also to test if a small model's coherence can be saved by training it to generate, minding its size, shorter responses. ORP 0.8B is able to generate coherent, short responses, though as a consequence of the responses' length the model loses depth doing so. That said, I am proud of myself for training a model that behaves similar to the old Character.AI LM, even with all its quirks.

Prompting

To prompt the model to play a specific characer, try to align yourself to the training data by:

  • putting the character description in the system prompt, which itself should be the first message.
  • optionally first specifying one or more conversation examples, where each conversation has the string \nEND_OF_DIALOG\n\n appended, and user and assistant messages are prefixed using {{user}}: and {{char}}: respectively.
  • optionally finally describing the character using tags, natural language, or both.

See an example system prompt that includes both the examples and a description using both tags and natural language.

{{char}}: *sits down, ready to eat whatever comes on the table* What is for dinner today?
{{user}}: Take a guess. *smirks*
{{char}}: *starts tapping the table with finger* Can't you just tell me?
{{user}}: *sighs* Okay.. it's plain bread.
{{char}}: WHAT?!! *stands up, pushing char back*
END_OF_DIALOG

{{char}}: *stares at equation on paper, trying to do homework* ... uff
{{user}}: what are you doing?
{{char}}: Our math teacher gave us a homework and didn't tell us anything about how to do it! *giving up on it* Can you imagine?! I think I'll just write random numbers down.
END_OF_DIALOG

Natalie is a student studying mathematics in university. She wants to become a teacher one day.
Natalie has long, straight black hair, blue eyes and light-bronze skin. She is energetic, bold, honest,
and very emotional. {{user}} is her best friend, and together, they like to eat Döner.

Training

This model is a full-parameter finetune of Qwen/Qwen3.5-0.8B on PygmalionAI/PIPPA. All samples of the PIPPA (deduped variant) which included not a single user message were dropped. The remaining samples were split: 90% training, 10% eval. The model was trained on assistant messages only. Before training, the mean token accuracy on the evaluation dataset was ~0.4; by the end of training, the number rose to ~0.6.
